Tokyo Abura Soba is a tiny shop in one of the Side streets of this business neighborhood and it serves one thing only; Abura soba!

It is a small chain, so you might see this in other areas such as Akasaka Mitsuke, Jimbocho or Nishi-Ikebukuro and as already mentioned they are specialized in Abura soba. The meaning of “Abura” is oil. Now, what does that mean?

If you think about buckwheat Soba, this is far away from it. The concept of Abura soba is more of Soup-less Noodles in a somewhat oily sauce at the bottom. So when you order your bowl, you will get thick ramen noodles, with a special sauce, mainly containing soy sauce as well as pork grease and a few standard toppings. At Tokyo Abura Soba, you chose your size and then add more toppings, as you like. The egg is always a good choice in case you are not sure…

Another tip; As with these noodle shops, opt for a size smaller than you feel like eating, don’t worry, you will be well fed especially as the oily soba can be quite heavy. You can add spicy oil or vinegar to it too as you progress through your meal. To be honest with Abura Soba, we prefer to leave the vinegar, but give it a try.

The shop itself is nothing special, the staff is nice but that’s it. But the food is just so good! So if you see one of those shops, step inside, get your ticket and enjoy this tasty variation of a classic!
