Without a doubt, the Ghibli Museum in Tokyo is one of the must-visit museums for any anime fan coming to Japan. Or actually, let me take that back, for anyone visiting Tokyo! Because Studio Ghibli’s movies have reached far beyond anime and have gained cult status with people of all ages.

So it was pretty sad to see its temporary closure due to the coronavirus early this year. As you might know, it is usually booked up for months ahead, with tickets being released on a monthly schedule and generally sold out within a few hours. For a lot of people, this also meant tickets were being canceled and of course refunded.

The Inside of The Ghibli Museum Is A Well Kept Secret

I have been lucky to have visited the museum a few times and it is one of these places that keep their exhibits well undercover, with taking photos and videos inside the venue prohibited. So you are in for a treat, as now, you will be able to get a top-secret glimpse of Ghibli Museum’s interior, as its staff has created unique short videos, accessible on their official Youtube channel.

Of course, this does not substitute a real visit, however, just seeing the inside of this famous Tokyo attraction lets you get a feeling for what it is like. With the giant spring mural greeting you at its entrance, setting you off on a magical journey, as you wander through corridors, small tunnels, and up hidden staircases.

And if you are an artist or just love to see how these amazing movies were made, you will love the replicated workrooms, that are part of its permanent exhibition. As you are walking through “the studio” filled with collectibles and tiny trinkets of inspiration, it feels like Hayao Miyazaki or one of his artists has just popped out to grab lunch. Leaving behind a still life of their creations, pencils, watercolors, and sketches…

Tip: You might want to pause this one a few times to take it all in.

And as you walk around, you will be surprised about all the attention to detail. As you discover your favorite characters in corners, doorknobs, and in the designs of its beautiful art nouveau stained glass windows.

A little journey inside the Ghibli Museum that hopefully turns into a real visit. Until then, why not watch your favorite movie again or get your Free Ghibli themed wallpaper, to impress your friends in that next virtual chat.
