Another great thing to while visiting is pottery in Kyoto and we tried the Taiken-Kiyomizu pottery experience. And it is great fun!
We love this, as it is an activity you can easily fit into your sightseeing! The shop is right in the middle of Kyoto’s historic district and on the way to Zenkōjidō Temple. So you will be able to create a traditional cup or plate in less than 30min (but you can, of course, take longer if you wish) while having a great time exploring Kyoto. And the staff speak perfect English too!
It’s one of these things you do that you will remember for a long time. Like how many times will you make something like that on a trip? And you have a token of it to remember or a great gift for someone back home.
And even if you are not great at crafts, the guys here make it really easy for you to get a good result! Starting off with an already made basic shape, they teach you simple techniques that you then apply to make whatever you love. And in about 20min you are the proud maker of your very own ceramic vessel!
Different Plans
They offer different plans with the most basic one being 20min and costing from 3100¥. Now, the flyer states it costs from 1900¥ which is a bit misleading. As it is before tax and they will furthermore need to burn and ship your cup. Wich is also added extra.
If you want to make more than one piece, you could spend 60 minutes and go for the “Zuikou Plan”, which will cost you ¥4,900 for 2 pieces. Find out more about the different plans here.
You can walk-in if it’s not busy but we recommend to make a reservation before, either via email or phone. They only have about 5 work stations, so if you plan ahead you will be able to make the most of your time. Also, best to confirm the final price then, as it will vary depending on where you will ship it too.
Our Conclusion about this pottery in Kyoto workshop?
It is such a fun thing to do! You will defiantly remember it!
We also loved that the ceramic was sent a few weeks later by post, like a little flashback to our trip. And oh, our morning coffee just tastes so much better out of our self-made cup!
