If you happen to walk by Oiwake Dango Honpo Cafe you might just pass by thinking it’s just a sweets shop. But little do many know it has a small restaurant attached, which is quite famous!

It’s a well-kept secret close to Shinjuku Gyoen. So if you are planning on visiting this beautiful park, make sure you put this on your list!

It’s famous for its dumplings called “だんご” as well as it’s shaved ice dessert known as Kakigōri. They also have some savory food but people really come here for these two traditional Japanese desserts. We came in particular for the dumplings but will be back for the shaved Ice!

Now the Menu here is only in Japanese, but with plenty of Pictures you will be totally fine ordering and the staff is really lovely.

The dumpling set for 567¥ includes two variations. Meaning 2 skewers with 3 dumplings each on it. Covered in a sauce or topping. The standard set comes with one skewer topped with Red Bean past and the other one is a traditional Mitarashi Dango. This comes with a gooey sweet and salty sauce. But you can ask for any flavor you prefer, you just may pay a little extra. We changed the red bean (Anko paste) for Macha. Which added an extra 33¥ to our bill. But the best part, Green tea is free with plenty of refills. The waitress walks through the restaurant with a huge teapot offering top-ups, it’s really quite charming.

Once your food comes out it’s Instagram worthy! They just make it look so good! Just don’t waste too much time taking pictures, dig right in, as it’s just too good!

Another thing we love about Oiwake Dango Honpo Cafe, you can buy all of the dumplings to take out too! So next time you go to a party, this would make the perfect treat to bring. With other flavors including yuzu, chestnut but also savoury ones, wrapped with nori or rolled in spices, you can really not go wrong!

And if you are finished but still have space for real food, why not check out Coto Cafe or Sapporo Soup Curry Tokyo Dominica?
