If you come to Kamakura, whether it is just for a Day trip from Tokyo or a short weekend getaway, the Great Buddha of Kamakura is a must-see!

In Japanese, the Great Buddha of Kamakura is called “鎌倉大仏, Kamakura Daibutsu” and is a huge bronze statue located close to a small mountain forest and part of Kotokuin Temple.

How big is it really?

This statue depicturing Buddha has a total height of 11.4 meters, which is quite impressive. That makes it the 2nd tallest bronze replica of Buddha in Japan. With the tallest one residing in beautiful Nara and its Todaiji Temple.

But the really great thing about the Great Buddha of Kamakura is that it is outdoors. This really gives it something magical!

Good to know!

Many people do not realize that this Statue is hollow. That may not even be a big shock, but the interesting thing is, you can actually go inside the Great Buddha of Kamakura. How “great” is this?

Walk up to it and on the right-hand side, you will find a tiny gate that leads you into the inside. It is accessible every day from 8 am to 4.30 pm and you will be asked for a tiny donation of jus 20 Yen. Try it, it’s really interesting, especially the audio, as every sound made resonates within the space.

How to get to the Great Buddha of Kamakura

Arriving from Kamakura Station from Tokyo it is about a 30 min walk. To be honest, we got lost a few times..

So our recommendation is to take the Enoden railway line, which is located right next to the JR Kamakura station. It looks like a Tram or Streetcar and is actually worth the ride just for its uniqueness. Get off at Hase Station, which is the third stop and takes about 10 min. From there it is about a 5 min walk.

Our opinion?

Although we have seen the Great Buddha of Kamakura many times, we always come back when we come here for a seaside getaway! It is one of our favorite places in Kamakura.

The best time to visit is early or then just before closing and be aware, the Weekends can get quite busy! But even when it is, you can still feel the majestic presence and tranquility of this spiritual place so close to busy Tokyo.

Also make sure to visit Hokokuji Temple, the Bamboo Temple while here, another must-see in Kamakura!
