This lively entertainment area may be Osaka’s most famous tourist spot. Famous for its neon lights, over the top signage, and its variety of restaurants, bars and of course Street Food.

A little History of Dotonbori

When we are talking about “Dotonbori”, we generally refer to the Dotonbori Canal as well as the Dotonbori Street running parallel to the canal in the Nanba district. In more detail, the central part between Midosuji Boulevard and Sakaisuji Street, which is about 600 meters out of the total 2.5km. With Ebisu Bridge across Dotonbori being the epicenter, featuring the sign of the iconic Glico runner.

The history of Dotonbori dates back to 1612 when Yasui Doton a rich merchant invested into creating a new waterway linking the local canal network with the Kizugawa River for Business. Unfortunately, war interrupted and he was killed. But later in 1615 a family member completed his work and the canal was named Dotonbori in his memory.

The area began quickly to flourish, with many Restaurants, theater companies and others moving into this now vibrant area. Although many of the theaters have been destroyed since, it continues to be a hub for night time activities, with its many clubs and small venues.
