<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the last part of Hokkaido’s Food Culture, let&#8217;s discover more must-eats. One very obvious the other, often referred to as Hokkaido&#8217;s &#8220;soul food&#8221; might surprise you a little. But this soupy goodness is very hard to resist, especially on a cold winter day.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Soup Curry</strong><br></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Japanese love curry. Japanese curry, curry katsu, Indian curry and<em> kare</em> <em>pan </em>(curry paste inside bread). It&#8217;s one of Japan&#8217;s foodie obsessions. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hokkaido, always an area to actively distinguish itself from the mainland, turned traditional Japanese curry and made it their own with the soup curry variant which can be found across Hokkaido and Hokkaido-themed restaurants in Tokyo and Osaka. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hokkaido soup curry is basically traditional Japanese curry with a soup broth. Again, it&#8217;s the perfect dish for the harsh winter conditions on Japan&#8217;s northern territory. Warming and filling it&#8217;s become a firm favorite of locals and tourists who have been transfixed by this soupy goodness. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Seafood</strong><br></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hokkaido seafood is revered throughout Japan. Fresh from the sea and straight on the millions of plates around the country it has a truly god like reputation within foodie circles. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You name it, if it comes from the sea then Hokkaido puts it on the menu. The crab, lobster, scallops, squid and sea urchin are superb and gobbled up daily throughout the prefecture and beyond. Try some fresh seafood at one of the island&#8217;s numerous fish markets. Kaisen-don is a favourite with locals &#8211; ostensibly it&#8217;s a huge mound of fresh seafood placed on top of a large plate of rice. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s the freshness and emphasis on quality which separates Hokkaido seafood from other places in Japan. The crab here is also revered. There are mainly three kinds of crab sold here. The king, snow and hairy varieties are eaten here by the ton every day at the island&#8217;s plethora of high-end crab restaurants and even all-you-can-eat crab eateries which is easier on the bank balance. For the more adventurous eaters out there try the crab <em>miso</em> (crab brain) which is considered a delicacy in Japan. It sounds weird but it&#8217;s pleasantly surprising. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex"><ul class="blocks-gallery-grid"><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img decoding="async" width="553" height="738" src="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/fresh-sea-food-at-sapporo-market-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png" alt="" data-id="10575" data-full-url="https://i0.wp.com/obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/fresh-sea-food-at-sapporo-market-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png?fit=553%2C738&amp;ssl=1" data-link="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/?attachment_id=10575" class="wp-image-10575" srcset="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/fresh-sea-food-at-sapporo-market-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 553w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/fresh-sea-food-at-sapporo-market-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 225w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/fresh-sea-food-at-sapporo-market-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 300w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/fresh-sea-food-at-sapporo-market-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 315w" sizes="(max-width: 553px) 100vw, 553px" /></figure></li><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img decoding="async" width="555" height="736" src="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/freshly-cooked-sea-food-at-market-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png" alt="" data-id="10576" data-full-url="https://i1.wp.com/obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/freshly-cooked-sea-food-at-market-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png?fit=555%2C736&amp;ssl=1" data-link="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/?attachment_id=10576" class="wp-image-10576" srcset="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/freshly-cooked-sea-food-at-market-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 555w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/freshly-cooked-sea-food-at-market-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 226w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/freshly-cooked-sea-food-at-market-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 317w" sizes="(max-width: 555px) 100vw, 555px" /></figure></li></ul></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Last thoughts..<br></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hokkaido, then, is a foodie&#8217;s paradise. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With a real and unabashed focus on freshness and quality, visitors here can experience a kind of cuisine and food culture which is completely distinct from other parts of Japan. The locals take food very seriously and are, understandably, very proud of their culinary heritage. So indulge yourself in what Hokkaido has to offer from the ramen and dairy to the lamb and seafood. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You won&#8217;t forget Hokkaido and the food and experiences you have here will last for years to come, until your next much-anticipated visit. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As you already heard in the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="first part of Hokkaido’s Food Culture (opens in a new tab)" href="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/hokkaido-food-culture-part-1/" target="_blank">first part of Hokkaido’s Food Culture</a>, the giant northern Japanese island is very different from the Japan you think you know. So let&#8217;s see what else this foodie&#8217;s paradise has to offer.</p>

<script async="" src="https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js"></script>
<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block; text-align:center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-7675741398882182" data-ad-slot="1295407206"></ins>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Dairy Queen</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hokkaido natives, it has to be said, love their dairy. Cheese, cream, lashings of butter, milk and ice-cream all play central culinary roles within the island&#8217;s food culture. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This must feel like a foreign land to Tokyoites and Osakans who generally eschew dairy. It does, however, feel like a piece of home if you come from northern Europe, middle America or other areas of the world where a day without cheese can be considered a calamity. It would be nothing short of rude not to try Hokkaido&#8217;s renowned soft-serve ice cream. There&#8217;s a multitude of ice cream parlors dotted around Hokkaido so treat yourself to a couple while you&#8217;re there. Leave a bit of space for butter cookies which the locals swear by. They also make for some pretty well-received souvenirs.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="980" height="960" src="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Photo-by-Free-To-Use-Sounds-on-Unsplash.png" alt="Hokkaido Food Culture - soft ice cream" class="wp-image-10519" srcset="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Photo-by-Free-To-Use-Sounds-on-Unsplash.png 980w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Photo-by-Free-To-Use-Sounds-on-Unsplash.png 300w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Photo-by-Free-To-Use-Sounds-on-Unsplash.png 768w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Photo-by-Free-To-Use-Sounds-on-Unsplash.png 696w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Photo-by-Free-To-Use-Sounds-on-Unsplash.png 429w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /><figcaption>Photo by&nbsp;<a href="https://unsplash.com/@freetousesoundscom?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText">Free To Use Sounds</a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/ice-cream-japan?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Jingisukan&nbsp;</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The mighty <em>jingisukan</em> (literally Genghis Khan) is Hokkaido&#8217;s culinary beating heart. Everyone loves it and talks about it in hushed and reverential tones. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Essentially a dish consisting of large slices of mutton with grilled vegetables on an oddly shaped grill then dipped in various sauces and washed down with the local Sapporo beer, jingisukan is absolutely essential (for the carnivores out there) when visiting Hokkaido. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s not difficult to find out why this kind of dish is so popular in this area of Japan. As it is dark in winter, it gets very snowy and freezing cold so what&#8217;s better than a hearty plate of barbecued lamb with veggies and beer? Really a no brainer. Jingisukan is available throughout the island but probably most associated with the capital city of Sapporo. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As with every region and city in Japan, <strong>Osaka too, has some signature dishes</strong>, so you may ask yourself, what to eat in Osaka?&nbsp; And you are right, there are a few dishes I think everyone should try. Just what are these must-eats in Osaka?&nbsp; And where do I get them?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let me share what you cannot miss out on while visiting and give you some recommendations for the best restaurants serving each of these dishes.</p>

<script async src="https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js"></script>

</script>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1.Okonomiyaki&nbsp;</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I am sure you heard about this <strong>delicious savory Japanese pancake</strong>. With its name begin derived from two words: okonomi, meaning &#8220;what you like&#8221;, and yaki meaning &#8220;cooked or fried&#8221;. It basically means cook what you like. Which explains the many toppings you can add to your basic pancake. Which essentially is a flour, egg, and dashi omelet mix with cabbage and pork.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now, we are in Osaka where all the ingredients are mixed and you will be searching a long time for noodles. Wait, but doesn&#8217;t Okonomiyaki include Soba noodles? Not in Osaka, what you are thinking about is <strong>Hiroshima-Style Okonomiyaki</strong>, almost the same but not. As this style layers or stacks all the ingredients and adds some tasty Noodles, before being smothered in tasty Okonomiyaki sauce and Mayo. Which one is better? I let you decide. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are plenty of Restaurants in Osaka, but perfectly located in Dotonbori and hands down <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="the best place to eat Okonomiyaki in Osaka (opens in a new tab)" href="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/ajinoya-okonomiyaki/" target="_blank">the best place to eat Okonomiyaki in Osaka</a> is Ajinoya Okonomiyaki. They don&#8217;t take reservations, so come early, but it is definitely worth it!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="984" height="735" src="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Ajinoya-Okonomiyaki-batter-cooking-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan-1.png" alt="Ajinoya Okonomiyaki Okonomiyaki being cooked" class="wp-image-9950" srcset="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Ajinoya-Okonomiyaki-batter-cooking-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan-1.png 984w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Ajinoya-Okonomiyaki-batter-cooking-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan-1.png 300w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Ajinoya-Okonomiyaki-batter-cooking-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan-1.png 768w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Ajinoya-Okonomiyaki-batter-cooking-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan-1.png 80w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Ajinoya-Okonomiyaki-batter-cooking-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan-1.png 265w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Ajinoya-Okonomiyaki-batter-cooking-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan-1.png 696w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Ajinoya-Okonomiyaki-batter-cooking-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan-1.png 562w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /><figcaption>Almost ready&#8230;</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2.Kushikatsu</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not as famous with foreign tourists, but well known and appreciated by locals is Kushikatu. And trust me, once you try it it’s hard to deny how tasty those skewers are.  </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kushikatsu, also often referred to as kushiage are <strong>deep-fried skewers of meat and vegetables</strong>.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kushikatsu#cite_note-Rowthorn_2007_p._95-1"> </a>The name comes from the Japanese, kushi that refers to the actual skewers used and katsu, which normally means a deep-fried cutlet of some sort.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The great thing about Kushikatsu are the many varieties. And especially in vegetable deprived Japan being able to choose from more than 10 is quite a luxury. We love how each is adding a different texture and flavor, so make sure you try a few. I recommend the Renkon (which is lotus root), quail eggs, mochi (a soft rice cake), camembert as well as anything wrapped in bacon&#8230;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The skewers are served with raw cabbage and a pot of sauce to dip them in. Now <strong>the only rule is &#8220;no double-dipping&#8221;</strong>. And you don&#8217;t need to be a germophobe to figure why. As the sauce is usually shared with the whole table and only topped up when running low. But don&#8217;t worry, you won&#8217;t forget this one, as there are usually plenty of signs (in various languages) making you aware of this.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Probably <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="the most famous Kushikatsu Restaurant in Osaka (opens in a new tab)" href="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/japan-osaka-restaurant-kushikatsu-daruma/" target="_blank">the most famous Kushikatsu Restaurant in Osaka</a> is Kushikatsu Daruma, with many Restaurants dotted all over Town. Great if you are looking for some food and maybe a beer. A match made in heaven.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="988" height="742" src="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Kushikatsu-Daruma-Kushiage-Skewers-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png" alt="Kushikatsu Daruma Kushiage Skewers" class="wp-image-10013" srcset="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Kushikatsu-Daruma-Kushiage-Skewers-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 988w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Kushikatsu-Daruma-Kushiage-Skewers-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 300w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Kushikatsu-Daruma-Kushiage-Skewers-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 768w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Kushikatsu-Daruma-Kushiage-Skewers-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 80w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Kushikatsu-Daruma-Kushiage-Skewers-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 265w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Kushikatsu-Daruma-Kushiage-Skewers-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 696w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Kushikatsu-Daruma-Kushiage-Skewers-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 559w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></figure></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3.Takoyaki</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Maybe one of the best street foods in Osaka is Takoyaki and another dish you must try while you are in town. These <strong>tiny balls made of batter and generally filled with bits of octopus</strong> are the perfect snack, pretty much any time of the day. Also watching them prepare it is already worth your money. With the skilled chefs moving so quickly is a performance of its own..</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As Takoyaki means fried or cooked octopus it is pretty straight forward. Normally you will get a small tray of 6 balls topped with takoyaki sauce, mayo, seaweed and generous shavings of dried bonito flakes. And the funny thing is, the more you eat the better they get. Just be careful, these are piping hot, so make sure to give it a few seconds before you dig in.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My favorite place is <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.shirohato.com/kukuru/doutonbori.html" target="_blank">Kukuru</a> located in <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Dotonbori (opens in a new tab)" href="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/dotonbori-osakas-street-food-heaven/" target="_blank">Dotonbori</a>, but if you cannot make it there, get them somewhere else. You may also see them at local festivals, which would be another great opportunity to give it a try.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="979" height="733" src="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Takoyaki-being-made-in-Osaka-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png" alt="Takoyaki being freshly made in Osaka" class="wp-image-10207" srcset="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Takoyaki-being-made-in-Osaka-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 979w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Takoyaki-being-made-in-Osaka-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 300w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Takoyaki-being-made-in-Osaka-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 768w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Takoyaki-being-made-in-Osaka-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 80w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Takoyaki-being-made-in-Osaka-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 265w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Takoyaki-being-made-in-Osaka-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 696w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Takoyaki-being-made-in-Osaka-Photo-by-Obsessed-with-Japan.png 561w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></figure></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Last words&#8230;</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So here we are and these are <strong>Osaka&#8217;s signature dishes</strong>. If you visit Osaka even just for a day, make sure to try at least one of them. You will not regret it. And if you do, let me know what you think in the comments below. Because we always love to hear from our readers here at Obsessed with Japan! </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With 2020 just starting and an amazing year behind us. We wanted to <strong>celebrate the restaurants, cafes and Accommodations we fell in love with!</strong> We wanted to recognize the establishments we think are Obsessed with Japan&#8217;s best of 2019!!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Have you heard of the lucky New Years Food &#8211; Osechi? As we are getting closer to the end of the year, <strong>glamorously boxed meals</strong> are starting to appear. And you may wonder, what are they? </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These boxes are what we call Osechi, especially served for New year, <strong>they contain a variety of lucky foods</strong>. They are often served in restaurants, but also made at home. And there are certain dishes that hold very special meanings. Although recently also more modern Osechi meals have appeared, including western dishes or fusion type foods. These are often catered to a more foreign audience.</p>

<script async src="https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js"></script>
<ins class="adsbygoogle"

</script>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A little History about Osechi</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Although these days New Year&#8217;s Eve has become the main event, in Japan, <strong>New Year&#8217;s day still holds many traditions</strong>, such as visiting a shrine for &#8220;Hatsumode&#8221; and eating Osechi. With the later bringing good fortune for the rest of the year.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There used to be a superstition in the past, that said <strong>using the kitchen and cook for the first 3 days of the new year, would be bad luck</strong>. Because &#8220;Toshigami&#8221; (a deity) would stay over. And this is how the tradition started, with many families preparing <strong>these sumptuous meals a few days in advance&#8230;</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Of course, most people don&#8217;t believe this anymore, nevertheless, the practice stayed and we are grateful, as it really is <strong>such a nice tradition</strong>. And we also do love these luxury bento boxes!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="707" height="470" src="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Osechi-Dishes.png" alt="Osechi Dishes" class="wp-image-9439" srcset="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Osechi-Dishes.png 707w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Osechi-Dishes.png 300w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Osechi-Dishes.png 391w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Osechi-Dishes.png 696w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Osechi-Dishes.png 632w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Osechi-Dishes.png 460w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Osechi-Dishes.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /><figcaption>Photo: <a href="http://www.lifecorp.jp/">http://www.lifecorp.jp/</a></figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How about the lucky foods?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now let’s have at a look at these lucky foods we talked about! Some are more obvious than others, but <strong>sure all are delicious</strong> ???? </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Kinton</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This paste made out of chestnuts is called &#8220;kinton&#8221;, with <strong>&#8220;kin&#8221; meaning gold</strong> in Japanese the name itself becoming the &#8220;golden dumpling&#8221;. It symbolizes valuables, of course gold, and is to wish for good finances in the coming year.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Konbu</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The Japanese word for joy</strong> &#8220;yorokobu&#8221; is associated with this lucky food. Which is a type of kelp.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Kamaboko</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kamaboko fish cakes usually come in red and white, with the red in them being said to <strong>ward off evil spirits</strong>.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ebi</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Eating Ebi or in English Shrimp, is <strong>symbolic of longevity</strong>. And this seems to come from the shape it takes once it&#8217;s cooked. All curled up like an older person, it stands for living up to an old age.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="779" height="518" src="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Shrimp.png" alt="Photo by Daniel Klein on Unsplash" class="wp-image-9438" srcset="https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Shrimp.png 779w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Shrimp.png 300w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Shrimp.png 768w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Shrimp.png 391w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Shrimp.png 696w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Shrimp.png 632w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Shrimp.png 460w, https://obsessedwithjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Shrimp.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@danielklein?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText">Daniel Klein</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/shrimp?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tazukuri</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tazukuri, or sardines used to be used as fertilizers in the past for rice fields. Which is why they have become <strong>a symbol of a good harvest</strong>. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Kuromame</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These beans stand for <strong>diligence and strength</strong>, as one meaning for the Japanese word “mame” means diligent, as well as the more widely known &#8220;bean&#8221;.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Kazunoko</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Herring roe is definitely one of the easier ones to understand. With its tiny eggs (as we imagine) <strong>representing fertility</strong>. </p>
