In collaboration with JR East Japan Railway Tomokazu Matsuyama, a Brooklyn-based Japanese contemporary artist has created a small space for the community to come together. It is also part of Lumine’s art project looking to promote accessible public art within Tokyo.

If you are not familiar with Tomokazu Matsuyama’s style, he is best known for his multilayered, colourful artworks, a fusion of using traditional Japanese textures and images blended in with a 20-century American lifestyle.

The art parks main feature is the “Hanao-San”, a 7m tall sculpture, surrounded by abstract colourful patterns. It is a place to meet, rest and enjoy, which is why you will also find plenty of stools and benches to do so.

So come here and take a few minutes to take it all in. It is open 24h, free and the perfect place to get a break while exploring this busy Tokyo neighbourhood.

Yes, some of you may have heard about it before, as is not an entirely new concept here in Tokyo. Since 2007 the annual summer Art Aquarium has been a favorite with Tokyoites, drawing roughly 10 million visitors since it was first started. And because of this huge popularity, they have decided to make it a permanent exhibition. Lucky us!

What is This Art Aquarium?

This is not your typical aquarium, as you may already imagine. This museum will, of course, have plenty of fish. Featuring over 30’000 goldfish, both rare and common types, swimming inside various vessels and sculptures. Creating a magical experience, very much alike the Epson Team Lab. As the Art Aquarium will also be using projection mapping to created multicolored displays. Taking you on a magical getaway.

Expect seasonal changes and of course cultural themes such as the ” Forest of Kingyo”, maybe one of their most amazing displays because of its scale.

The artist behind all of this is Hidetomo Kimura, who believes the goldfish or Koi to be an important part of Japanese culture. Therefore, he wanted to create spaces, where people could come and see their beauty, but also experience something even more magical.

The Art Aquarium is located in Nihonbashi and the exhibition will open its doors on the 28th of August 2020. Tickets are now on sale but might be sold out pretty quickly. Despite Corona and all. So if you do want to visit get your ticket quickly available here. The Earlybird tickets are available at 2,000円, the full price will be 2,300円.

This is definitely a place worth visiting, yet please keep Corona guidelines in mind. Visiting this Art Aquarium is certainly one for the list, so bookmark and once there is less risk, make sure to go visit.

The Artist

Hitotsuyama Studio was founded by artist Chie Hitotsuyama and creative director Tomiji Tamai. Their Studio is based in Shizuoka, a Japanese prefecture near Tokyo, and found it’s home inside an old paper strip factory, previously operated by Hitotsuyama’s family. Which if you ask me, beautifully highlights the connection of taking tradition and personal history and transform it into something new and exciting.

Japanese Life-Imitating Paper Art

It is almost surreal looking at what Hitotsuyama and her team have created. You expect these animals to just start to move at any time, however, they stay frozen. Yet their expressions often tell a story. So beautiful to look at, you almost forget they are made entirely out of paper.

From Newspaper to Art

Once you realize how these sculptures are made, you will be even more amazed. Entirely made by hand and using recycled old newspapers, the artist and her team take sheet after sheet, wet it, twist-fold and roll it, until every piece finds its place.

With the coloration entirely coming from the prints inside the newspaper. Slowly these animals take shape over hours and hours of work. From sea turtles to monkeys it is insane how realistic these life-size sculptures look.

A Very Unique Perspective

Their work has been displayed internationally, with previous exhibitions including a show at the MOAH:CEDAR, California in 2017, and has naturally been showcased within Japan. For more details have a look at the Studios Website.

Tell Me More

About 2h drive from Tokyo in Niigata, a prefecture famous for its rice, every year in autumn, just after harvest the fields turn into huge outdoor galleries. With local farmers inviting students from well-known Musashino Art University in Tokyo to showcase their talent and create sculptures that will transport you into another realm.

What started in 2006, with a few exhibits has since grown into a full festival. With more sculptures being added each year. With bigger definitely being better in this case. As this local festival has grown, aside from the beautiful straw sculptures you will also find markets, workshops, and even small performances. Making it well worth a day trip from Tokyo. But of course, the majestic sculptures are still the main reason why people are visiting.

When & Where

The Wara Art Festival is held every year in late August at the Uwasekigata Park with the beautiful sculptures being showcased until the end of October (depending on the weather of course). Check their homepage for updates as these dates are not set in stone and for those of you who cannot visit, you can also check out their Facebook page for some behind-the-scenes insights.

There is also the making-sure-everything-looks-respectable and that struggle of getting a good angle to not show the freshly done laundry spread around the house or that stain on the wall.

But what else is there to it? How come it is still so prevalent in Japanese culture today? Let’s have a closer look and if you happen to find your inner artist on the way, why not try it for yourself.

What is Origami?

So let’s discover this art that transforms paper into life imitating structures. First comes first, Origami got its name from the Japanese “ori”, which means folding and “kami” the word for paper. As so often in the Japanese language, the first letter of the second word softens when combined, which leaves us with the term “Ori-gami”.

In it’s most basic form, it describes a square sheet of paper that is being folded to resemble an object found in nature. Of course, artists prefer special paper, depending on what they are folding. Often these sheets will have different colors on each side or come with colorful prints or patterns. But generally, any paper will do.

Tradition

Without a doubt, the most famous of them all is the “Crane”. A simple yet beautiful example that many children in Japan learn to fold early on. Not just because it is a fun thing to do, but because there is more than meets the eye.

As with pretty much everything in Japanese culture, there is a deeper meaning. So it does not come as a surprise that the Crane too, is not just a beautiful ornament, but has a symbolic significance. It stands for longevity and good fortune and is known as “the bird of happiness”.

Chances are if you have been to Japan, you would have encountered multitudes of these cranes stung together, called “Senbazuru”. They can often be seen at Temples and Shrines all around the country. And you may have wondered why they are there. Well, legend has it, that if you are folding 1000 cranes, a wish will be granted. And so they have become a symbol of hope and healing. With many people giving these wreaths of cranes as a gift when someone is ill.

But of course there are many other shapes still widely popular, with some of these pieces of art needing hundreds of folds before being completed.

Modern Origami

Looking at Origami in its simplest form, it is the act of folding square pieces of paper to create shapes. But this would not honor the work and craftmanship behind many modern creations. With Origami artists in Japan and abroad showing off their skills, audiences are often puzzled by the complexity of these amazing sculptures. With one swiss origami artist even attempting to fold a live sized elephant there have been many attempts of modernizing this craft.

But more often than not, traditions are fused with modern interpretations. With artists moving away from the traditional shapes and instead creating their own. These artists are true pioneers and show that there is space for adaptation while keeping traditions alive. Have a look and some of the Spanish artist Gonzalo Calvo’s creations in this video:

Get folding

If you are feeling inspired now, the great part about it is, all you need is a square sheet of paper and you are good to go. The basic folds are easy to learn, though it might take a little practice making it look effortless. You never know, you may just as well be folding intricate designs before you know it.

1.The GOOGLE Art Project

Not technically a virtual Museum, Google has partnered with over 1000 cultural institutions worldwide to help you discover artworks online. Which is hard to beat.

With many amazing works of art available in high resolution you can even create your own virtual museum tour via Google Street View! So go on, wander and discover some of the most famous art there is, or take a shortcut and check the complete list of museums here.

2.The Vatican Museum

I have been to the Vatican Museums before and it is one of the most amazing collections of art that exists in the world to date. Imagine rooms filled from top to bottom with artwork curated by the many Popes over centuries.

The sheer volume is overwhelming, so this virtual tour will give you a great look inside, in case you have not had the chance to visit. Or if you have, will let you revisit its iconic exhibits. And yes, you can even take a look at Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo’s masterpiece, where photography is not even allowed…

3.The Louvre

Being one of the largest museums of the arts, this iconic Paris Museum had to be on this list. We love their online tours, as you get a chance to see its most popular exhibits. So go on, explore some rare artifacts as well as world-renowned artists, as you virtually walk through the Louvre’s maze-like interiors…

4.Epson TeamLab Borderless Digital Art Museum

Being an all-time favourite since its opening in 2018, the Epson TeamLab Borderless Digital Art Museum located in Odaiba, Tokyo has awed its audience. Submerging visitors in outer-worldly spaces, it is an amazing real-life experience.

And yes, it will not be as grand watching the projections from home. But I promise, once you turn on the sound and turn of the light you will get closer to it then you may have dared to imagine…

5.The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History

From paintings and digital worlds how about exploring some natural history? With about 145 million specimens and artifacts (who is counting) the Smithsonian will keep you busy for some time.

So takes its online tour, meet dinosaurs and get a glance at our own origins. And for anyone interested, it also includes an exhibition on outbreaks and epidemics.

6.Nasa

Not that interested in art but want to find out more about space? Than this is the one for you!

Here, NASA will bring you on a virtual tour of its facilities. Go on and check out the Langley Research Center, the Glenn Research Center, or drop in the Houston Space Center via their app. Aside from virtual tours, here you can also find some augmented reality experiences and all you need to know about their space exploration.

And that is not all…

Because this is only a small collection of what is out there. With plenty of other virtual museums and many especially opening their doors online in times of Coronavirus, it would be a pity to not check them out. Or how about some virtual Hanami? With plenty of live cams all around Japan, you don’t have to miss out.

Just about 1 hour by train from Shibuya Station towards Yokohama, you will find Fujiko F. Fujio Museum. You may ask, what? And you are right, because if you are not a dedicated fan, you may not know this name. But we are pretty sure you know this author and illustrator’s famous creation: Doraemon. The little cat robot, whose ears have been eaten by mice. True story. And of course many others of his characters.

We love it because the museum offers a very rare insight into Fujiko F. Fujio’s original works and illustrations, way beyond Doraemon. With both permanent and temporary exhibitions, you will find yourself discovering the person behind the pictures and don’t worry, they offer free audio guides (English, Chinese or Korean) to cross the language barrier. 

What to expect at Fujiko F. Fujio Museum, the home of Doraemon?

Another thing we like is the fact that this museum is very interactive. With the main space, known as the “People’s Plaza” sending you on a bit of a treasure hunt letting you uncover the inspiration and process behind the creation of our favorite feline robot.

But there is more…

Once you got your fill of seeing the artwork, why not relax at the museum’s in-house theatre? Where in intervals of 20min you can watch a few short, original movies. And if that is not enough our favorite place is still to come: the rooftop playground. Perfect for that selfie, as here you find many life-size figurines including Nobita’s dinosaur and the “Anywhere Door”. Hm, where would you go if you could use this one?

Last but not least even a Robot has to eat, right?

Just next to the rooftop playground you will find a cafe featuring dishes and drinks inspired by Doraemon and his friends. We recommend a Doraemon latte for that caffeine fix or get one of the mains, such as taco rice or pasta. All inspired by this adorable character..

And if that is not yet enough, a quick stop at the museum shop will mark the perfect end to your visit. But we warn you, this is a very dangerous place…

Because this is a popular Museum, similar to Studio Ghibli tickets become available on the 30th of each month, two months in advance. You can pick from four 2h slots and the entry fee is 1000¥ for adults and 500¥ for Children.

If you are in Japan you can buy them at the Lawson here. If you are not in Japan you can also get them via Lawson, but the process is slightly different, but don’t worry the site is in English here.

Our Opinion?

Fujiko F. Fujio Museum, the home of Doraemon is the perfect place to visit and see some original artwork, eat Doraemon-inspired dishes or get your Instagram game on! We love their rooftop playground and it really is a fun place to visit, whether you are by yourself, with family or a few friends.

1.Roppongi Art Tunnel

Hidden between the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, containing the Mori Art Museum and the National Art Center you can find Roppongi tunnel and its vivid Murals.

The short tunnel stretches from the National Art Center, via Nogizaka Station on the Chiyoda line, via the Tokyo Metropolitan Road 319 towards Roppongi Hills and its Mori Art Museum. So it is the perfect way to connect the two and even squeeze in another art-related stop. Win-win!

How to get here?

There are a few stations within walking distance including Roppongi Station. But the easiest is to take the Chiyoda line to Nogizaka Station. Take “Exit 6” and it will be less than 3min on foot.

2.Astro Boy

We love this pixelated version of Astro Boy by Invader a french Artist created in 2014. It is small and many people will not notice, but it is one of these hidden treasures. 3.Tezuka Osamu Mural

Yes, the Tezuka Osamu Mural is almost Astroboy part 2 and probably one of our favorite Murals in Tokyo!

Here Osamu Tezuka’s 1952 beloved cartoon has found a home right outside the station and any Anime/Manga Fan will love this! With a variety of Scenes being depicted, we always loved the wintery one. But to be honest, we find something new every time we see it. Definitely worth getting off and checking it out even just for a few minutes. Oh and pay attention to the Music when leaving the platform ????

On the Yamanote line get off at Takadanobaba Station, it is right there.

4.The Shamisen

To be honest, we love this for so many reasons. The way it changes at the sunset, it is really one of these beautiful works of art. And we are glad Spanish artist Aryz created it in 2019 as part of the Tennoz Art Festival 2019. Just around the corner of the TERRADA Warehouse in Shinagawa.

Get off at Tennozu Isle Station exit B and turn left. If you walk along the park you are heading right for it.

5.Harajuku Moutain Graphicz Mural

Harajuku Moutain Graphicz Mural is one of the really well-kept secrets right in the center of Tokyo! It showcases about 15 murals, printed in high definition, yes you heard right this is not painted! And all of them are well hidden in a tiny alley just off Harajuku’s busy Takeshita-dori.

Sponsored by Mountain Graphicz a shop that prints anything from stickers, T-shirts, well you name it, the Mural shows a great selection of artwork.

How to get here?

If you are coming from Harajuku station it is located almost at the end of Takeshita street, let’s say about a 5min walk. But we warn you, if you arrive on the weekend this could turn into a 30min walk. So we advise you to check it out on a weekday!

6. Mot8 Mural

Just at the top of Shinjuku under the Yamanote and Saikyo Railway Tracks graffiti artist Mot8 has created not one, but 3 huge Murals!

We love these for their traditional look, depicting mythical creatures and epic encounters.

Needless to say, whether you are taking a selfie or looking for a great backdrop for that photoshoot, the Mot8 Mural is way worth a visit!

How to get here?

As you are leaving Seibu Shinjuku Stations north exit, walk for 2 min and you will find the first of the 3 Murals on the left-hand side.

Just at the top of Shinjuku under the Yamanote and Saikyo Railway Tracks graffiti artist Mot8 has created not one, but 3 huge Murals. And we have a feeling a 4th one is one the way, maybe next year?

We heard that Mot8 has spent a respectable time abroad living and working in Italy. Which is partly why he has developed an almost pop art style. With most of these works including mythical creatures and depicting great encounters.

Biological Matrix Tokyo

Just as you are leaving Seibu Shinjuku Stations north exit, you will find the first of the 3 called “Biological Matrix Tokyo”.

We feel that although in the same style, it has more western influences than the others. Is that a Leprechaun there in the middle?

Mienai Chosen

The next Mural you will see on the way is “Mienai Chosen” created in 2018.

We really love this one, as it has a great sense of textures and unexpected objects. The more you look at it, the more you see another part of the story.

New Era

Just recently in the 2nd half of 2019, the latest Mural has been finishes called “New Era”. We think it is definitely the most psychedelic of all of them. Located on the other side of the Street. Very close to 1-13-2 Hyakunincho, in case you check it on google maps.

Our opinion of the Mot8 Mural?
